China's Growing Pains

The New York Times has an ongoing series on China and it's explosion on to the world economic stage, and the damage to the environment it is leaving in it's wake.  It seems they are having a difficult time mixing economic growth and communism and it is moving faster than the government can control.

We Should All Be Thankful

This is not the type of post I would normally do, but this story caught my attention, as it should with anyone who has a heart and lives free.
Just a reminder to be thankful for all you have because of what was sacrificed by others. Some lose more than others, so give generously to organizations that help those in the military that are in need.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Semper Fi Fund - Hugh Hewitt has an annual show with them and have got to listen first hand from soldiers who were helped by the fund. This is a no-nonsense organization. If they find an injured soldier in need they ask how they can help and they write them a check-end of story.

Soldiers Angels - Another great organization that sends goods and services to soldiers over-seas. Started by a mother who saw the need and took control.

The USO -  The long time organization that has been giving to the soldiers since the beginning. They bring a little bit of home to those on the battle front.

OPEC Putting On A Good Face

During the Opec meetings of last week, the idea of putting up $3 billion dollars to a climate change fund was proposed. Who knows wether they will actually do it or not. But the U.N. would like to see it, as one official is mentioned below:

"OPEC can deliver a big part of the solution to climate change," said Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, speaking on the sidelines of the summit. "International action on climate change is a war against emissions, not a war against oil."

That's funny, according to stopglobalwarming.org and the IPCC it is most certainly a war on oil.

The world's scientists have done their job. Now it's time for world leaders, starting with President Bush, to do theirs. That is the urgent message at the core of the latest — and the most powerful — report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 2,500 scientists who collectively constitute the world's most authoritative voice on global warming.

Released in Spain over the weekend, the report leaves no doubt that man-made emissions from the burning of fossil fuels (and, to a lesser extent, deforestation) have been responsible for the steady rise in atmospheric temperatures.

Oil, of course, is a fossil fuel and burning it creates emissions. That is why they are wanting to use this money to research carbon sinks and other methods of trapping carbons. My hope would be that they would do the research themselves, funding local groups in their own countries and shut out the U.N. and it's agencies.
But my guess is that what is said here is not what is really going on. I got a feeling it's a United Nations "shakedown" of OPEC. They are in need of some cash and the oil "titans" should kick in some money to help...or else. Why else would they bring this up in a closed OPEC meeting? They don't have in vested interest in seeing carbon reduced. And what is a U.N. climate guru doing at the meeting anyway? Usually, those meetings are for OPEC members only and they are very tight lipped about what is said and done in them.

OPEC is paying them off, for whatever reason, and not another word will probably ever be said or heard about it.

Supreme Court To Rule In DC Case

The Federal Supreme Court said they will hear the Washington D.C. handgun ban case District of Columbia v. Hellor.

Two good articles have been written on the issue. This one comes from the Wall Street Journal.

This one from Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit written for the New York Post.

Honestly, I am a little scared of the outcome. I am not convinced like some that the court will rule in favor of individual rights. Of course they may end up wording it in a way that won't address that issue. Yet, both of the articles above put a lot of weight into the presidential race and the candidates picking of sides about the issue. I just don't see that it matters which candidate is for gun control or who isn't. Besides, I don't think their is any question about who is in which camp.
The problem with the courts over the last few decades has been their desire to make their own laws and interpretations of laws.  An issue as important as this one, regardless of what we as citizens think, can be changed from what we know today by a simple ruling of nine people. They could decide that guns are state run militia items and just like that we lose our right to own a firearm.  And whether Mitt Romney or Hillary Clinton think we should or shouldn't have guns is irrelevant to the nine justices who sit on that bench.
My hope is after all is said and done with this case, we can put a nail in the coffin of handgun bans. Hopefully, we will give honest, law abiding citizens the ability to defend their lives on an even basis with those who don't live by the law.

Let Me Count The Ways

How many tips can you come up with to help save the planet? Ten? Fifty? One thousand-eight hundred and sixty four?

Here is a short list of those who have come up with some of their own.

The Boston Globe has 84!

Vanity Fair has 50 ways.

Time did one better!

The Londoner has 1001 ways to help, but you have to win.

Glamor Mag is only interested in the top ten.

You could buy this book to learn 750 ways to help.

At LighterFootsteps.com, all you have to do is write 3 letters.

Iowahawk has his own top ten list, and he's poking some fun at Al Gore.

Dayton, Ohio came up with 99 ways.

The Sustainability Institute has 4 not-so-simple-things to do.

ABC News "Planet Earth 2007-Seven ways to help save the world"

25 Ways from TreeHugger.com

DoSomething.com shares 27 ideas.

Obviously there are many different ways to help save our planet. Protecting our air and land is vital to the future of our existence. The planet is only so big and its resources are finite, so we need to learn to use them wisely and efficiently.
I like to make fun of things and joke about it all, but I do care. I care so much that last week I had new low-e windows installed in my home and they cost me a small fortune. We voted for a recycling service in our town last year, I abhor litter-bugs, and we reuse or recycle the best we can. But I drive a huge SUV, and I love it. Our house is bigger than we need, but wouldn't give it up for anything.
Most of all we love our country and we refuse to submit to a world body that threatens us with doomsday scenarios, unproven computer predictions, and U.N. baptized ex-vice presidents. The Kyoto treaty is worthless and they know it. Words are cheap, action is hard. Look at the EPA standards the heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers in the U.S. have to meet today and in the next few years. Even the European union doesn't have to meet this strict of standards.
Americans don't need to be scared into being green.  I don't need to be told stories of death and destruction for me to do something. Give us something reasonable, and American citizens will do their part. Most of us don't buy scare tactics, but the U.N. will never stop trying. They will keep pushing until they have squeezed just a little more power out of your hands and into theirs. They cannot be trusted, and all their programs must be scrutinized.
    I have one idea...Think!

Past And Future Of Predictions

James Lovelock is a 88 year old environmentalists who is the predictor of horrible events caused by global warming. As a matter of fact, he pretty much has decided it is too late to do anything about the climate and by 2100 humans will be coming to an end.

Timesonline writer Rachel Johnson lays out the story behind Mr. Lovelock and his nutty insights.

By 2020, he believes, droughts and extreme weather will be the norm (not the scattered showers so dear to our forecasters), the Sahara will be moving into Europe, Berlin will be as hot as Baghdad, populations will live off man-made comestibles such as Quorn because there will be no land to grow food and, oh yes, London will be under water.

Here is some of his own words regarding the latest IPCC report:

When I looked at the IPCC report again - it was with a new sense of awareness - I now saw it as the scariest official document I have ever read. It was all too clear that the message from climate scientists was not reaching the public and especially not in the USA, this of course was before Al Gore presented his book and film. I now take an apocalyptic view of the future because I see 6 to 8 billions of humans faced with ever diminishing supplies of food and water in an increasingly intolerable climate.

So, in one paragraph he mentions the IPCC, Al Gore, unreceptive Americans, and how we are all doomed. Guess he is sold on it.

Obama And The Environment

At Barack Obama's web-site, it seems he is trying to have it both ways on the issue of global warming.

"The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. There may still be disputes about exactly how much is naturally occurring, but what we can be scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to a point of no return. And unless we free ourselves from a dependence on these fossil fuels and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global catastrophe."

-Barack Obama
Speech in Chicago, 4/3/06

Sounds like we need to start thinking about change. And then the next paragraph says this:

Global warming is real, is happening now and is the result of human activities. The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years. Glaciers are melting faster; the polar ice caps are shrinking; trees are blooming earlier; oceans are becoming more acidic, threatening marine life; people are dying in heat waves; species are migrating, and eventually many will become extinct.

Man...it sure sounds like we are doomed. So which is it?

Either way, if you run through his ideas about what he would do as president, some are actually not bad ideas. He offers some tax incentives and wants to make the federal government more efficient first.
Most are the same tired old democrat party-line ideas that will never solve anything. Cap and trades don't work, biofuels don't work in applications that matter, and talking more with the U.N. is just plain stupid.

And then again, Maybe the U.N. is where he really belongs. Not as President of the United States. Notice anything funny about the picture?

New Data Ignored

You would think this would be some big news, but couldn't find any major publication running the story. Guess that is no surprise though.
It seems that the Arctic Ocean currents tend to reverse ever decade or so.

Our study confirms many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming," said Morison.

"While some 1990s climate trends, such as declines in Arctic sea ice extent, have continued, these results suggest at least for the 'wet' part of the Arctic -- the Arctic Ocean -- circulation reverted to conditions like those prevalent before the 1990s," he added.

These scientist must have forgot to confer with the IPCC before releasing their results. They are in big trouble now!

Literal Man-Made Global Warming

If you enjoy the computer game Simm City, you will really have fun with the release of Simm City Societies. The makers have decided that global warming needs to be a part of the Simm world.
Simm time moves fast, and it is said that global warming will be moving fast enough to notice. So what could the outcome be? i guess that depends on wether the player can control the carbon emissions or whatever.
The best part is, it is brought to you in collaboration with BP...the oil company BP.  I am not yet sure if that is great marketing or great foot shooting?

More Warnings From The IPCC

The IPCC says we are doomed...again. When will we be scared enough?

I know the answer to that. When Al Gore becomes president.

And in case you didn't hear, Al Gore is writing a sequel book to the Academy Award winning movie An Inconvenient Truth. If you can't wait, you can pre-order at Target.com.
I will get mine when it hits the bargain bin.

Founder Of Weather Channel Doubting Global Warming

John Coleman, founder of The Weather Channel thinks global warming is an "outrageous scam" and a "manufactured crises". He now works at a local station in San Diego.

Coleman responded recently to his original blog post about his doubts on global warming with this updated post.
My question is, how in the world did he get away with this living in California? He said most of his e-mails congratulated him for standing up against the tide of nuttiness. And yet, I think that proves my position that the majority of people who use there GOD given brain-power and do a little research come to the same understanding: Global warming is a manufactured crises. But California is the leader in trying to develop ways to combat global warming. And somehow he hasn't been sold the bill of goods yet. Will they have to threaten his job before he believes? Or maybe he hasn't been called a "denier" enough yet, and eventually get tired of everyone hating him and will change his mind to elevate the nuisance.
But hopefully he will stand his ground and keep fighting the good fight.
Keep trudging the road Mr. Coleman!

Give A Little Global Warming For Christmas

If you are a greenie, here are some really cool global warming gift ideas for  friends and family this year.

How about  a global warming coffee mug.

Learn about alternative sources of energy  building a model.

Fan of the Kyoto Treaty? Give the gift of support with a t-shirt.

Here is some earthly body care.

Everybody should have one of these.

Bush-bashing is all the rage this year.

Bumper stickers are cool!

Here is Environmental Defenses roundup of all things green for the holidays.

This is great for figuring out your own carbon output.

And of course, this is the best gift for those who are not sure what to give this year.

All great gifts for those who are wanting to give green this year. But you will have to find something else to put your gifts under this year.

Here is a good alternative. It's made of wood, so I would suggest a fiberglass version.

Just wanted to put out a few ideas so you can be better informed on being environmentally sound this holiday season.

Colorado's Climate Action Plan

Colorado Governor Bill Ritter laid out a climate action plan for our state, and boy are we excited!

Coloradans, he said, were up to the challenge. "The people in this state get it," he said. "There is greater and greater consensus and understanding of the dangers of global warming and the need to address it."

The problem is, it sounds like the same old political jargon that resonates from most democratic leaders today. Reduce emissions by switching 20% of our energy production to renewable. Never mind that we can't do it at a reasonable cost, or with current technology. And you must also forget the fact that since we will force our local energy company, Excel Energy to provide it,  you can expect the cost increases to be passed down to the consumer.
Vincent Carroll from the Rocky Mountain News takes to task Ritters ideas and points out a few other problems.

No, my fellow Coloradans: The transformation will be painless, even “exciting.” “New jobs, new businesses and new investments” will cascade into our midst. No sacrifice necessary, thank goodness.

If this were actually true, the New Energy Economy would unfold without prodding, as consumers, businesses, manufacturers and utilities shifted from fossil fuels to more inexpensive, attractive options. But since this isn’t occurring with the speed desired by those most worried about global warming, government here and in Washington is determined to stack the deck. They will use incentives and taxes to realign the prices of different energy sources; grant massive subsidies to such expensive technologies as clean coal; and issue mandates boosting the price (and greenness) of various consumer products, including cars.

Clearly, this is the only way it can be done using Ritters proposal.  There are alternatives, unfortunately they do not align with the global warming fanatics time lines. "We must act now! We are at the tipping point!"  Whatever.
Regardless what the final plans bring, we as consumers will pick up the tab. The less fortunate among us will have a more difficult time meeting their bills, and government will have to spend more helping them, which of course means the they will need more money which they will get from democratic leaders who will raise our taxes. The endless spiral that is the democrats.
But eventually the public will have had enough and when election season arrives and the climate has not yet killed off the human race, they will look too a republican to ease the pain. That's the cycle of things in our world. Hype gets things moving, and when the hype has burned itself out, reason returns.
