2008 International Conference on Climate Change

The Heartland Institute is hosting a global warming conference to discuss other reasons why the planet might be warming.

The 2008 International Conference on Climate Change is the first major international conference to focus on issues and questions not answered by advocates of the theory of man-made global warming.

Hundreds of scientists, economists, and public policy experts from around the world will gather on March 2-4, 2008, at the Marriott New York Marquis Hotel on Manhattan’s Time Square, to call attention to widespread dissent in the scientific community to the alleged “consensus” that the modern warming is primarily man-made and is a crisis.

Now if this was "leading scientists" from the global warming front line, the media would have already put this conference on the front page of their papers. Instead, this will never see the light of day. Besides, they are just a bunch of global warming "deniers" and the debate is really over, right?

New Global Warming Bill

Everyone's favorite democratic representative John Dingell, is going to start proposing global warming legislation next spring. Can't wait to see what kind of nuttiness he will come up with this year.
He even has his own nutty following.

Here is some of his ideas about fixing the climate in the past:

Gas taxesCarbon taxCap & Trade

Here is what he proposes on his own website:

The legislation I am proposing would impose the following:

A tax on carbon content:

  • $50 / ton of carbon (phased in over 5 years and then adjusted for inflation)
    • Coal, including lignite and peat
    • Petroleum and any petroleum product
    • Natural gas

A tax on gasoline:

  • .50/ gallon of gas, jet fuel, kerosene (petroleum based) etc…(added to current gas tax) (phased in over 5 years and then adjusted for inflation)
    • Exemption for diesel – The fuel economy benefits of diesel surpass even its emissions benefits; it provides about a thirty percent increase in fuel economy and a twenty percent emissions reduction
    • Biofuels that do not contain petroleum are exempt.  Biofuels blended with petroleum are only taxed on the petroleum portion of the fuel.

**The .50 gas tax is in addition to what is derived from the per ton carbon tax in the previous bullet.

Phase out the mortgage interest deduction on large homes.  These homes have contributed to increased sprawl and longer commutes.  Despite new homes in and of themselves being more energy efficient, the sheer size, sprawl and commutes lead to dramatically more energy use – or to put it more simply, a larger carbon footprint.

In other words, tax the crap out of the american consumer, take away their tax deductions, and take away their choice, all for the good of the planet.

Jonah Goldberg calls this kind of democrocy Liberal Fascism. I just started reading his new book.

British Humor On Climate Change

Jeremy Clarkson from the Timesonline writes about the "green lobby" in England.

In Wales every single south or westerly facing escarpment is being smothered in wind farms. Giant tubular bird mincers that whir and moan 24 hours a day and eventually, after a year or so, produce just enough energy to light up Mrs Llewellyn’s bedside lamp.

Isn't that the truth.

Lies About The Snowpack Totals

This article from the Washington Post quotes the journal Science on a new study showing that global warming is the definite cause for declining snowpack in the west. rather than any type of natural occurrence.

"We've known for decades that the hydrology of the West is changing, but for much of that time, people said it was because of Mother Nature and that she would return to the old patterns," said lead author Tim Barnett of the University of California at San Diego. "But we have found very clearly that global warming has done it, that it is the mechanism that explains the change, and that things will be getting worse."

So how does that explain these numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-NRCS

It's only going to get worse? Over that last few years, the west has not gotten as much snow as normal. But that has all but come to an end the last two years. Snow averages have been through the roof this year with every region in Colorado posting huge numbers. Some have even called an end to the drought we have been experiencing.

    Don't believe everything you read.

Thanks to Instapundit, we now know that Zombie attacks will be on the rise if CO2 emissions keep rising.
