Britian Urged To Halt Airport Expansion

The United Kingdom is being urged by the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) and the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) to stop anymore expansion of the airline industry untill they underestand more, among other things,  the effects of contrails and carbon emmisions from aircraft.

Among the main areas of dispute are:
  • The economic benefit of aviation: Treasury analysis based on aviation industry research estimates future increases in economic activity through expanded aviation - but excludes any calculation of losses to the UK tourist industry through cheap flights abroad.
  • The impact of aviation's greenhouse gas emissions: This is a particularly difficult area as scientists are still trying to work out exactly how much the heating effect of aircraft emissions is magnified, as the gases are released at altitude. There is also uncertainty over how to express the significance of the heating effect of contrails.
  • The role of technology: The aviation industry believes that many problems can be solved by improved technology. But many experts warn that improvements in technology cannot keep up with the increase in demand for flying.
How is it that funding hasn't been put in place for this? Here is a whole new area to study, write scientific papers, and scare people with.

The last one is probably a good idea if Britians air traffic control is as antiquated as ours.

Harrison Ford Is So Manly

Mr. Ford pulled a Steve Carell and waxed his chest to make a point about global warming and the rain forests.

The classic scene from 2005's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" — in which Carell screams out "Kelly Clarkson!" during his chest hair removal — was intentionally hilarious. Ford's message, however, is serious: "Every bit of rain forest that gets ripped out over there, really hurts us over here."

Bay Area To Impose Devastating Fee On Carbon Producers

   This is gonna hurt:

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District's board of directors was set to vote on new rules Wednesday that would impose fees on factories, power plants, oil refineries and other businesses that emit carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases.

If the board approves the plan, the agency, which regulates air pollution in the nine-county Bay Area, would be the first in the country to charge companies fees based on their greenhouse gas emissions, experts say. The new rules would take effect July 1.

The modest fee — 4.4 cents per ton of carbon dioxide — probably won't be enough to force companies to reduce their emissions, but backers say it sets an important precedent in combating climate change and could serve as a model for regional air districts nationwide.

4.4 cents! My God, they will put them out of business!
Seriously though, why bother? It will cost more to manage the system of collecting this stupid fee then they will take in from it.

Some are questioning thier authority to even impose this fee, but since everthing can be linked to global warming, the board is not
worried.

Bay Area district officials believe the agency has that authority because global warming is raising surface temperatures, which worsens air quality.
"We see a direct connection between the climate and air pollution," said Jack Broadbent, the district's executive director. "We believe think the changing climate is going to require effort on the federal, state and local level,"

Told you so! Since they 'believe/think it', then it is true!

Taxing Gas Is The Answer

I don't care much for this idea, but it shouldn't be a big deal to the people of California.

...there is something they could do TODAY that does not need federal approval:

Raise their state gas taxes to $4-a-gallon thus pushing the cost at the pump to $8.

As I reported in the Detroit News in February, economists agree — and real-world evidence proves — that raising the price of driving is the quickest way to get consumers to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles. In Europe, for example, gas taxes have goosed the price of gas to $8-a-gallon with the direct result that average fuel economy stands at 39 miles per gallon, (compared with 24 mpg in the U.S.) or within reach of California’s 2020 goal.

I agree that this would work, just like cigarettes, tax people into submission. But at what price to the economy? What about free market choice? What about those of us who like are SUV's?
Speaking of cigarettes...I wonder if anyone has done a study on the effects of global warming of the price of health care?
Why, yes their has! The site is called HealthCareBS.

I like this guy! Here is another post!

More Hurricans...Less Hurricanes...No Wait...

Everyone has now heard the news; new studies conclude that because of globlal warming, less hurricanes are going to be the norm.

Put five climate scientists in a really big paper bag with one hole in the end, then tell them you want a one page report, double spaced, on how they would find their way out, and you would get five different solutions averaging 235 pages and they are all wrong.Of course this took two years because it took that long to line up the funding they need to conduct the study.

Sorry. Just making fun of the whole situation.
