No New Record On Ice Melt

After last years record melt levels of ice in the Arctic last year, some were thinking it might be worse this year. But it's not looking like it.

Arctic sea ice area reaches an annual summer low in September but is about 1 million square kilometres bigger than at the same time in late July 2007 at about 6 million square kilometres, an area almost as big as Australia.
The global warming nutters must be saddened by the news.

Bangladesh Is Safe From Sea-Rise...For Now

The IPCC has been saying for quite awhile that sea-level rise will be the end of Bangladesh. But apparently that is not the case.

The United Nations' Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicted last year that the country could lose 17 percent of its land by 2050 because of rising sea levels due to global warming.

But a recent survey by a Bangladeshi research institute shows that the country's landmass has actually increased by more than 1,000 square km (386 square miles) since 1973, due to rivers dumping sediment as they meet the sea.

Just another reason why all of this global warming, sea-rise, doom and gloom nonsense is, well, nonsense. At the very least, the IPCC does a lousy job of research before making up their own facts.

Droughts, Floods, It's All Global Warming

You have too love the first sentence in this article:

It may sound contradictory, but the U.S. is experiencing more droughts and more flooding due to global warming - helping drive an increase in demand for scientists who understand water in the atmosphere and what happens to it on the ground.

We all know of course that droughts and flooding have never happened until we discovered climate change.

Heim pointed to Texas, which has experienced severe drought in the past few months but saw severe flooding in July because of localized thunderstorms and the remnants of Hurricane Dolly. "So you're having major drought and then major flooding in the same month in the same place," Heim said.

That has never happened either I suppose?  It's a symptom of global warming that Texas was in a drought and then a thunderstorm came, and then a hurricane came...and then it rained alot? When a hurricane makes landfall on already soaked soil, guess what...it floods!

The frustrating part of all of this is that everything these days needs an explanation. Hurricans, droughts, and thunderstorms have been apart of this landscape called Earth since before humans were here to influence it  These days it's more like they are looking for something to blame bad weather on (or push an agenda). But more than likely global warming is the new 'buzz-word' to get funding for their pet scientific projects.

Xubin Zeng, a UA professor of atmospheric sciences who co-wrote the proposal with Gupta, said the hope is for the new program to be funded by the federal government, the private sector and international organizations that stand to benefit from better predicting of weather extremes.

I think they should devise a program that better predicts the weather for the day after tommorow.

British Greenies Finally Admit What The REAL Problem Is

Classical Vaues blog found this one... (via Instapundit.

John Barrett, one of the authors of the reports by the Stockholm Environment Institute at York (SEI-Y) for the government and campaign group WWF*, was quoted by the BBC today:

"We are constantly battling against increases of wealth... There's a very fundamental problem here that no one really wants to talk about."

Not cool! It goes on...

"There is no way the government can hope to achieve any of its emissions targets without cheating unless it changes its policies on encouraging flying and hoping to satisfy people's insatiable demands for buying more and more stuff."

You have to love their honesty! Sounds like Barack Obama doesn't it?

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said. "That's not leadership. That's not going to happen,"
Let's be more like Europe..Yeah, that's the ticket!

Defending Nancy Pelosi's 'Saving The Planet'

Paul Krugman was thankful to hear that Nancy Pelosi wants to save the planet by not letting oil drilling off the coast come up for a vote.

I’m glad to hear it. But I’m still worried about the planet’s prospects.

True, Ms. Pelosi’s remark was a happy reminder that environmental policy is no longer in the hands of crazy people. Remember, less than two years ago Senator James Inhofe — a conspiracy theorist who insists that global warming is a “gigantic hoax” perpetrated by the scientific community — was the chairman of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee.

Beyond that, Ms. Pelosi’s response shows that she understands the deeper issues behind the current energy debate.

The deeper issues? What are those deeper issues exactly?
He does not go on to explain, and instead villifies McCain for changing his mind because he is now willing to drill offshore.

But the lure of a bit of political gain, it turns out, was all it took to transform him back into a standard drill-and-burn Republican.

Last I heard, you can't put a wind turbine on your car to make it go, although people are talking about it.

Global Warming Will Cause Illegal Immigration?

I used to keep an updated list of all the things I have found over the years (in printed form) of  what causes global warming and what global warming causes. It definitly needs updating.

Climate change likely to trigger global destabilization, report says

Illegal immigration, ethnic violence, humanitarian crises and national security issues will worsen during the next two decades because of global warming, according to U.S. intelligence agencies.
By Greg Miller, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 26, 2008

Actually, if this is true, global warming should cause border fence building.
If we every get the U.S.-Mexican border fence built, we could scratch that illegal immigration worry. The funny thing is, we are willing to help other countries build their border fencing. We will even help pay for it!

Texans Trading Their Suv's For Golf Carts?

Texans are parking their big diesel pickups and hauling themselves to town in elcetric golf carts, according to this Wall Street Journal article.

Switching to tiny electric cars requires some big adjustments. With three children, the Peterses must use both their little cars when they take family outings. Every trip is an adventure into the land of the giants where they're dwarfed in traffic by SUVs and trucks. They've had to learn how far -- about 30 miles -- they can go on a single charge. The night they got their first car, they rousted a friend dressed in his pajamas for a test drive and he wound up having to help them push the car home.

Well, good for them I guess? Sounds inconvient and borderline stupid to me. I wonder how much their elctric bill has gone up charging the batteries on the cart?

Here is the line-up of Zap! companies electric cars.

Here is their 'sporty' version

Sweeeeet! Or not.

Pelosi's Misguided Reality

Charles Krauthammer has always been the leader when it comes to clear thinking and putting it too paper, and this article is no different.
He explains why House Leader Nancy Pelosi's 'save the planet' business and not allowing a vote on the floor for offshore drilling is reallu having the opposite effect. Of course, he best explains it with this line:

With $4 gas having massively shifted public opinion in favor of domestic production, she wants to protect her Democratic members from having to cast an anti-drilling election-year vote.

They are banking on an Obama win, and once that happens, drilling will be back on the table. Right know they are beholden to the environmental groups, and to keep them happy they can't have democrats voting yes on drilling. And with public opinion shifting, as Krauthammer says, she can't let them vote against it now either.

Politics are so much fun. It is not about doing what the country needs, it is about saving face.
