Will Americans Go For Eco-Hotels

This article from the New York Times tells us why European hotels are so much more eco-friendly than here.

Usually, a guest inserts a card into a slot when entering the room to turn on the electricity. Removing the card (which doubles as the room key) on the way out the door shuts off the power. It is an easy way to conserve energy.

There is also this:

The device is a dual-flush toilet. Instead of one button to operate the toilet, there are two: one for a 0.8-gallon flush (for liquid waste) and one for 1.6 gallons (for solids). The toilets, which average just under one gallon per flush — as opposed to 7 gallons for some older toilets — are standard in much of the world.

But it is pretty clear, if you read the article, we here in the states are really not interested.

Beijings Air Experiment

China's bid to clean up the air in Beijing before the whole world shows up is really just one grand experiment, and the scientists are there to see the effects.

Beijing's massive experiment with controlling pollution is offering international researchers a one-of-a-kind chance to study the large-scale effort in a uniquely urban laboratory.

"It has never been done before. I doubt it will be repeated. This is it. We've got a golden opportunity to fast-forward our research," said Veerabhadran Ramanathan, an atmospheric scientist from the University of California, San Diego, who is part of a multinational research project to track Beijing's pollution during and after the Olympics using unmanned drones, satellite data and ground-level readings.

Exciting News In Clean Power

There is great news that applies to the world of clean energy coming out of the MIT labratories, and this article explains some of them.
Here is one of them:

Water is H2O—two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom—and scientists have known for two centuries how to apply a jolt of electricity to split it into hydrogen and oxygen, a process called electrolysis. What Nocera's scheme promises is a way of doing what existing commercial electrolyzers do, but much more simply and efficiently.

"Conceptually, it's the same thing," Nocera says. "But instead of feeding electrons into a hermetically sealed box filled with a concentrated base, we can feed them to an electrode sitting in a simple glass of water, at room temperature and pressure, with neutral pH." That simple setup makes it easy to build, operate and maintain.

This is what we need; ways in which to create clean energy cheaper and more effeciently. That has been the problem with hydrogen and solar energies, costs are still too high to be put in mass use. Hopefully it all comes together
