Andrew C. Revkin of the
New York Times is really scared for New Orleans, and he has a question that he needs answered.
The question is, when do humans hold the line, and when do they back off, in the face of inevitable disasters? New Orleans, a city largely below sea level, will at some point face a storm that will be perfect — perfectly destructive, that is. It will be something like the 1969 category-5 Hurricane Camille, but on a track 10 or 15 miles further to the west. I don’t wish for it, but it is as inevitable as the chance of hitting snake eyes with enough dice rolls, and the destruction dice may well be getting increasingly loaded, both by rising sea levels and — possibly — warming seas.
The answer is easy. When that 'perfect storm' comes, those who stay will die, and those who leave will live. And if/when the sea rises, we will keep moving inland, and we will still build walls. When has anything including weather stopped us from living and working where we want too? Part of the problem is these global warming alarmists make you think that a sea level rise will happen overnight or something. One day we are having a party on the beach and the next day the water is a hundred miles inland. It is absurd and ridiculous.
But something else caught my attention. On the side bar of the article, you will find a box that explains what Dot Earth is and who Andrew C. Revkin is. Here is the first line:
By 2050 or so, the world population is expected to reach nine billion, essentially adding two Chinas to the number of people alive today.
One of the things a few liberals we know (yes I admit it) told the wife and I about the Palins nomination by McCain for VP is they thought her having five kids was wrong. One even said it was disgusting?! Where is this coming from? Is someone teaching this in our schools? Obviously, overpopulation could be a problem but how is that getting transplanted into peoples head to the point that they would think that having five kids is disgusting?
I will have to do some research on that.
