Anniversary Of The Incandescent Bulb

According to James Lileks, today is the anniversary of the invention of the incandescent bulb.
Who would have thought all these years later that it would still be in use today. Of course, the explaination of why Edison invented the bulb in the first place is quite amusing.
The problem these days with the incandescent bulb is how energy abusive it is, and that's why in the last few years we have seen a huge push toward the compact flourescent bulb.

Pro-Business Palin

The Chicago Tribune put this up yesterday, talking about Governor Sarah Palin's pro-business attitude in while mayor in Wasilla, Alaska. And they make the arguement that because of this, the lakes and streams are now polluted.

Palin refined her pro-business attitudes after becoming governor in 2006. Faced with choosing between development and the environment, she has sided more often than not with business interests:
—She helped kill a ballot initiative that would have blocked a massive new gold and copper mine from being built near the world's most productive wild salmon fishery.

—She challenged the listing of the polar bear and Cook Inlet beluga whale as endangered species. The listings might have threatened the state's oil and gas industry.

—Her administration helped kill a bill banning water pollution near where fish spawn.

—She started a committee to address global warming. But with oil companies contributing the largest percentage of the state's greenhouse gases, her committee set no goal for reducing emissions. Unlike other states, Alaska's climate change priority is focused on ways to adapt to warmer temperatures.
Of course none of this is backed up by any  proof, but I suppose the article is not lying. But remember, Palin alone didn't make all this happen. People voted, businesses came and were profitable because the citizens wanted what they sold. If the citizens were that worried about the environment, they would have acted accordingly.
But adapting to climate change seems to be a wise thing if you are to believe that you are doomed. But that is not important either. What is important is that she helped grow opportunity for the citizens of Wasilla.

New All Electric Mini

Here is the new all electric Mini.

Equipped with a 572-pound lithium ion battery of unknown capacity, the MINI E reportedly has a range of 150 miles after an 8-hour charge. Its electric heart beats out 204-horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, which should be plenty to make this MINI scoot. Indeed, the run to 60 should take a bit over 8-seconds and the top speed has been limited to 95 miles per hour. The entire car weighs in at a bit over 3,200 pounds and regenerative braking is used to extend the range.

Lithium, like so many other elements we dig out of the ground,  is a limited resource. And with the big rush now to build lithium ion batteries for hybrid and all electric cars, the worry is there will not be enough to feed the need.

This article goes into the arguement for and against lithium ion and whether there is enough.
