Where should I buy my tomatoes?

Here is another example of why the world of green is so confusing. Her you find a story from the TimesOnline answering readers questions about "being  green" problems. This person asks where she should purchase her tomatoes. Should she buy them locally grown Britain tomatoes or the imported ones from Spain?

Buying homegrown produce would seem to make more environmental sense. After all, transporting, refrigerating and storing tomatoes, creates a big carbon footprint.
But, as you point out, Spanish tomatoes grow in abundant sunshine, while Britain's crop requires large amounts of energy in the form of heat and light. UK growers say that they are at the forefront of energy-saving technology with about 25 per cent of greenhouses equipped with energy-efficient heat and power units.

So, after rambling a few paragraphs about the benefits and the problems with both kinds of tomatoes, can you guess what their answer was?

Perhaps taste is the best way to buy your tomatoes.

Brilliant!
